One of Prachyam's earliest videos, and the edit that set the template for the historical summation video in the Indic sphere.
The Edit
Celebrating New India is one of the earliest videos released by Prachyam, and I cut it. It compresses a long stretch of history into a very short, tempo-driven piece — the format that came to be known in the Indic sphere as the historical summation video.
The Subject
Short-form historical video barely existed in the Indic space in 2020. The
material was there — a large body of scholarship, a large and interested
audience, and a social internet on which both were active — but the format
connecting them was not. Long-form lectures and panel discussions circulated
among people already committed to the subject; nothing carried it to anyone who
was not already listening.
The constraint that shaped the answer was the platform. Twitter's native video
limit was two minutes and twenty seconds, and the attention it commanded was
measured in the first two or three seconds. A format built for that has no room
for a narrator establishing context; it has to work on pace, cut and image, and
it has to make its argument before it has explained itself.
How I Made It
The edit carries a large amount of history in a very small runtime, driven by pace and imagery rather than narration-led exposition. It introduced several editing techniques and a visual vocabulary that had not been used in the space before.
Where It Landed
The video went viral on social media, and the stylistic historical summation format it used was widely picked up afterwards.
